America has taken this decision at a time when tensions have increased over security in the Indo-Pacific due to China’s increasing aggression. The defense system plan is facing widespread opposition among the residents of Guam. People fear that due to the deployment of weapons, Guam will be caught in a possible conflict in the future. Along with this, there is also a fear of environmental risks to the island and indigenous culture. Kenneth Cooper, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Guam, said that the deployment of American weapons makes Guam a target. If there is a war, we are in the dock.

Robert Underwood, Guam’s former representative in the US Congress, said that the area is being used as an experimental test site for missile defense development. Robert Underwood, who founded the think tank Pacific Center for Island Security, also said that if missiles are deployed in Guam, then there can be no worse situation for the local people. It can destroy the lives and livelihoods of those who call this island their home. Some people believe that the deployment of missile systems will increase the military presence in Guam and will claim the land of the indigenous Chamorro community.
